New policy strengthens Farmers' rights in the US
USAgNet - 09/20/2023

Recently, the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) held its annual meeting. The big news? They've adopted a fresh policy to shield our farmers and foresters. This move aims to protect these hardworking folks from those annoying nuisance lawsuits.

Ted McKinney, the NASDA CEO, broke it down for us. He said this policy is all about preventing farmland loss, which often happens when other types of land start edging into agricultural and forest regions. “Our farmers? They're champions. They care for their land, provide food, fiber, and even fuel. They deserve to work without the fear of sudden legal hurdles,” McKinney expressed.

A recent USDA report showed a decline in the number of US farms. We're talking about 2 million farms in 2022, down from 2.2 million in 2007. Even more shocking? A drop of over 20 million acres of farmland in just a decade.

Supporting our farmers and encouraging new generations to take up farming is critical. This new policy could be that nudge, giving both seasoned and aspiring farmers the confidence to innovate and grow.
