C-SPAN Scholarly Center to Host Annual Research Conference
Indiana Ag Connection - 10/17/2019

For the sixth year, Purdue University will host the annual CCSE Fall Research Conference featuring work from the C-SPAN Archives. In addition to the presentation of scholarly papers, the Oct 21-23 conference will again feature hands-on learning and accounts by experienced users nationwide.

"It's ideal for research of any kind," says Connie Doebele, managing director of the Center for C-SPAN Scholarship & Engagement, which is sponsoring the conference. "In addition to being a research tool, video segments can be captured into a user's free account, ready with a click to show to classes, conferences, board members or even the family. Professors are using it in the classroom. Students are using it to add a video element to their papers. Researchers are finding that American political history can now be found in this archives."

The topic for the 2019 CCSE Research Conference is "Looking Forward -- Looking Back: Understanding Change in Policy and Process Using the C-SPAN Video Library." The conference organizer is Robert X. Browning, faculty director of the center, C-SPAN Archives director and professor of political science and communication at Purdue. Events will take place mostly at Stewart Center. In addition, the conference will include a tour of the C-SPAN Archives, which are housed in the Purdue Research Park of West Lafayette. There is no charge to attend, but pre-registration is requested. Registration is available here.

Conference attendees will learn to use the C-SPAN Video Library through a demonstration/training session and a practice session.

Fourteen panel presenters from across the country, selected by a committee of faculty from Purdue's Brian Lamb School of Communication and Department of Political Science, will show how they used C-SPAN video to produce research outcomes on various issues, including Supreme Court confirmation hearings and impeachment. Their research will be gathered into a companion book to be published by Purdue University Press.

All C-SPAN video since 1987 is archived, digitized and available online for searching and streaming from this library. The archives currently houses over 253,000 hours of video.

Video instructions on how to use the multilayered filters on the powerful search engine will be available on a flash drive for conferees and are online for everyone at https://bit.ly/2VOROFx.
