INFU Annual Convention Includes Food Safety, Farm Tours
Indiana Ag Connection - 10/19/2018

Come for the pizza and pie, but stay for the farm food safety workshop, sponsored by Indiana Farmers Union (INFU). On Nov. 2, Dugger Family Farm in Morristown is hosting a farm food safety workshop from 5 to 8 p.m., where guests can enjoy pizza and pie (sugar cream!) for dinner while learning the basics of building their farm food safety plans.

As a part of the INFU's annual convention weekend, the event, made possible through a Local Food Safety Collaboration grant awarded to Indiana Farmers Union, is FREE to attend and open to farmers and food producers hoping to learn more about how to safely harvest, process, and distribute their products. We invite guests to come out, socialize and network with other Indiana farmers, enjoy dinner on Indiana Farmers Union, and learn more about keeping their farm food safe and their customers happy.

About the Location: Dugger Family Farm in Morristown, Indiana is home to chickens, goats, alpacas, bees, cats, dogs, a local food store, and two humans: Sherri and Randy Dugger. The Duggers advocate on behalf of animals, the environment, independent family farmers, and local food systems through their work on the farm, at the statehouse and on Capitol Hill.

Plans are currently under way for the annual Indiana Farmers Union convention, which will be held on Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the beautiful Joseph Decuis Wagyu Farm in Columbia City. The free event, which is open to Indiana Farmers Union members and non-members, alike, will include refreshments throughout the day, a buffet lunch, and a farm tour, as well as several discussion-led sessions and a board meeting.

This year's convention will include a formal exploration of the current dairy crisis, which is affecting many of our organization's independent dairy farmers. The organization also will host a session on industrial hemp, as well the latest efforts by Indiana Farmers Union's hemp chapter to push for the crop's legalization in our state. Lastly, Greg Gunthorp, a celebrated fourth-generation Indiana pig farmer, owner of Gunthorp Farms in LaGrange, Indiana, and a nationally known advocate and speaker, will deliver the day's keynote speech.

Joseph Decuis Wagyu Farm supplies the award-winning and nationally known Roanoke, Indiana-based restaurant, Joseph Decuis, which was recently named by Travel and Leisure magazine the best eco-friendly restaurant in Indiana.
