Indiana Corn and Soybean Forecasts Increase

Indiana producers expect record corn and soybean yields this year according to Greg Matli, state statistician, USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office. The November Crop Production Report is based upon conditions as of November 1, 2018. Some highlights of the report follow:

- Indiana corn yield is expected to be 194 bushels per acre, up 14 bushels from last year. If realized, this would be a record high yield. Total production is expected to be 1.003 billion bushels, up 7 percent from 2017. The Indiana corn crop was 77 percent harvested as of October 28, up 12 percentage points from the 5-year average.

- Indiana soybean production is expected to total 356 million bushels, up 11 percent from a year earlier. If realized this would be a record high production. The yield is forecast at 60 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from the 2017 report. If realized, this would be a record yield. The Indiana soybean crop was 80 percent harvested as of October 28, slightly above the 5-year average.

- U.S. corn production is forecast at 14.6 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the October forecast but up less than 1 percent from last year. Based on conditions as of November 1, yields are expected to average 178.9 bushels per acre, down 1.8 bushels from the October forecast but up 2.3 bushels from 2017. If realized, this will be the highest yield and second highest production on record for the United States. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 81.8 million acres, unchanged from the previous estimate but down 1 percent from 2017.

- U.S. soybean production is forecast at a record 4.60 billion bushels, down 2 percent from the October forecast but up 4 percent from last year. Based on November 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 52.1 bushels per acre, down 1.0 bushel from last month but up 2.8 bushels from last year. Area for harvest in the United States is forecast at 88.3 million acres, down slightly from last month.
