Trout Stocking Scheduled at Columbia City's Morsches Park
Indiana Ag Connection - 04/24/2018

The DNR will stock 200 rainbow trout in the north pond at Morsches Park in Columbia City April 27 and be on site April 28 from 8 to 10 a.m. to provide assistance to families fishing for the first time who are interested in being taught how to fish.

Fishing poles and bait will be available on loan from the DNR during the event. Children age 17 and younger can fish without a license; however, adults 18 and older who plan to fish will need a fishing license and a trout stamp.

A short presentation on fishing basics will be offered at 9 a.m., and instructions on how to clean trout for cooking, will be given at 9:50 a.m. Individuals from the Three Rivers Fly Fishers will also be on hand to demonstrate fly tying.

No trout fishing will be allowed until Saturday morning.

This year marks the fifth year the DNR has stocked the pond. The first year drew about 50 anglers, and that number has increased to more than 250 over the years.

The pond has open access for shore fishing. A fishing pier is also available. A restroom facility will be open, and ample parking space is available.

The limit will be five trout per individual angler.

"We want families to come out and experience trout fishing," said Tyler Delauder, DNR assistant fisheries biologist. "It is fun, easy, and you can take your trout home to eat. We will even show you how to clean the fish if you want."

The DNR is boosting efforts to get more people fishing.

"If we can get families fishing together and having fun, maybe they will want to try it again," Delauder said. "There is no easier way to do that than have them come out and try trout fishing in a small pond."
