Cold, Wet Weather Stalls Indiana Planting
Indiana Ag Connection - 05/11/2021

Cool and wet weather returned last week, hindering planting progress and crop emergence, according Nathanial Warenski, state statistician, USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office. Soil moisture levels increased from the previous week, with 94 percent of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.

The average temperature for the week was 52.7 degrees Fahrenheit, 5.4 degrees below normal for the State. The amount of rainfall varied from 0.42 inches to 3.08 inches over the week. The statewide average precipitation was 1.63 inches. There were 2.6 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday.

Corn and soybean planting fell behind last year's pace after the wet week but still remained ahead of the five-year average. The cold and wet conditions throughout much of spring raised replanting concerns. Winter wheat conditions remained relatively stable, decreasing marginally from the previous week. Winter wheat jointing was just ahead of the five-year average, while the percent headed was slightly behind schedule. Livestock were reported in good condition with pastures greening up nicely in most areas. Other activities for the week included hauling grain, equipment maintenance, and marketing livestock.
