Trustees Approve Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital Construction
Indiana Ag Connection - 06/17/2019

Two major construction projects on the West Lafayette campus will move forward this year following a vote from the Purdue University Board of Trustees on Friday. Trustees gave approval to plan, finance, construct and award construction contracts for the Engineering and Polytechnic Gateway Phase I and the new Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital.

First discussed by the board in 2018, the Engineering and Polytechnic Gateway Phase I is the first of a two-phase project to replace the current Nuclear Engineering Building and Michael Golden Laboratories with new facilities to serve both the College of Engineering and the Purdue Polytechnic Institute with project-based instructional laboratories, design studios and collaborative spaces. The Phase I facility, approximately 145,000 gross square feet, will help accommodate increased enrollment in both the College of Engineering and the Polytechnic Institute.

The building, to be named Dudley Hall in recognition of alumni Bill and Marty Dudley's continued support of the College of Engineering and the Purdue Polytechnic Institute, also will serve as a new gateway to the academic campus and provide an eastern terminus to the Student Success Corridor, which runs along Third Street from Horticulture Park to Grant Street.

Although the building will occupy the same approximate footprint as the Nuclear Engineering Building and the southern portion of Michael Golden Labs, it will nearly double the density of square feet in this central area of campus. This will increase both the quality and quantity of instructional lab space for multiple academic departments, bring together labs that are currently geographically separated and provide more dedicated space for active learning and lab-centric instructional methods.

Supported primarily by $60 million in funding from the Indiana General Assembly, the project is expected to cost $80 million. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2020 and be complete in time for the 2022-23 academic year.

As previously announced, the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, which will include hospital facilities for equine, small animal and farm animal clients, will be constructed just east of Lynn Hall on Purdue's campus. It, too, is supported by funds from the General Assembly, covering $73 million of the expected $108 million project cost. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2020 and be complete in December 2021 with building occupancy scheduled for March 2022.

In other action, the board also approved the sale of two small parcels of land totaling just under half an acre on the Purdue Northwest campus to the city of Hammond to facilitate the widening of 173rd Street. The project will improve pedestrian access between the north and south districts of campus, pedestrian safety and public transportation connectivity by creating a pedestrian refuge island and an integrated bus stop primarily to serve Purdue Northwest.
