Engineering to Host its First Distinguished Lecture Series

Purdue's College of Engineering will invite five prominent, internationally recognized engineering faculty to speak at its first Engineering Distinguished Lecture Series.

The lecture series is a new initiative by Mung Chiang, the John A. Edwardson Dean of the College of Engineering. Each visit will be hosted by an engineering school or division and will feature both a lecture and a panel session. All events are free and open to the public.

The events are:

- Jan. 25, 1:30-2:30 p.m., Forney Hall of Engineering, Room G124. Lecture by Paul Anastas, the Teresa and H. John Heinz III professor in the practice of chemistry for the environment at Yale University. He serves as the director of the Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering at Yale and has published 13 books on sustainable technology.

- Jan. 26, 9-10 a.m., Wilmeth Active Learning Center, Room 3138. Anastas will be part of a panel session.

- Feb. 8, 3-4 p.m., Forney Hall, Room G140. Lecture by David Maidment, the Hussein M. Alharthy Centennial Chair in Civil Engineering at the University of Texas. He is a specialist in surface water hydrology and the application of geographic information systems to hydrology.

- Feb. 9, 9-10 a.m., Wilmeth Active Learning Center, Room 3138. Maidment will be part of a panel session.

- March 1, 9:30-10:30 a.m., Pfendler Hall, Dean's Auditorium. Lecture by Matthew Darr, professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering at Iowa State University. He leads a research program that focuses on the use of electronic technology and data analytics to solve applied engineering challenges in agriculture.

- March 1, 3:30-4:30 p.m., Pfendler Hall, Dean's Auditorium. Darr will be part of a panel session.

- March 22, 3-4 p.m., Forney Hall, Room G140. Lecture by Eva Tardos, the Jacob Gould Schurman professor of computer science at Cornell University. Her research focuses on algorithms and games on networks and simple auctions.

- March 23, 9-10 a.m., Wilmeth Active Learning Center, Room 3138. Tardos will be part of a panel session.

- April 27, 1:30-2:30 p.m., Fowler Hall in Stewart Center. Lecture by Robert Kahn, chairman, CEO and president of the Corporation for National Research Initiatives. In his recent research, Kahn has been working on developing the concept of digital object architecture as a key component of the National Institute of Immunology.

- April 27, 3-4 p.m., Wilmeth Active Learning Center, Room 3154. Kahn will be part of a panel session.
