Roche Diagnostics Joins Environmental Stewardship Program
Indiana Ag Connection - 07/19/2018

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) welcomed Roche Diagnostics of Indianapolis to the Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) during a ceremony held this week.

Roche joins 58 other ESP businesses, each of which is committed to implementing or maintaining measureable environmental improvements such as reducing water or energy use, decreasing solid or hazardous waste or reducing air emissions.

Roche Diagnostics has been part of the Indianapolis landscape since 1964 when it was founded as Bio-Dynamics. Roche has maintained a standard of environmental compliance, and has decreased its water use by 11 percent and energy use by 9 percent since 2015. The company has sought to reduce its environmental footprint in other areas as well. Efforts include reusing or recycling packaging materials, preventing uncontrolled loss of cooling energy from warehouses, building or refurbishing warehouses to meet the latest energy efficiency standards and selecting transportation companies that train drivers to drive efficiently and use vehicles that meet low-emission standards.

To maintain ESP membership, Roche must report on its environmental initiatives every year and reapply for membership every four years.

The Environmental Stewardship Program focuses on improving Indiana's environment and business climate through innovation and efficient resource allocation. Participating organizations achieve environmental objectives through creating and implementing an environmental management system. Applications to the Environmental Stewardship Program are accepted two times each year. The spring application round occurs April 1-May 31, and the fall application round occurs Sept. 1-Oct. 31.
