Indiana County Fairs Compete in 'Fight the Hunger, Stock the Trailer' Food Drive Challenge
Indiana Ag Connection - 06/01/2023

County fairs in Indiana are gearing up for an exciting competition that aims to make a difference in local communities. The "Fight the Hunger, Stock the Trailer" food drive challenge is back and bigger than ever, with 36 county fairs participating statewide.

Last year's successful pilot phase paved the way for this expanded challenge, which sees county fairs competing against each other to collect the most pounds of food donations for their trailers. The Jackson County 4-H Goat Club emerged as the 2022 winner, amassing an impressive six tons of food donations and receiving a $3,000 prize from Farm Credit Mid-America and Rural 1st.

This year, Farm Credit Mid-America and Rural 1st have increased the prizes. The first-place winner will receive $5,000, the second-place winner will receive $3,000, and the third-place winner will receive $2,000. Additionally, participating 4-H clubs can earn $500 if they collect over 1,000 pounds of food and $250 if they collect under 1,000 pounds.

The partnership between Farm Credit Mid-America, Rural 1st, and local 4-H clubs allows the collected food to be donated within each county, benefitting the local communities directly.

County fairs and 4-H clubs that have not yet joined the challenge can contact their local Farm Credit Mid-America office to get involved. The "Fight the Hunger, Stock the Trailer" food drive challenge exemplifies community spirit and generosity, bringing together county fairs from Bartholomew to Whitley in an effort to combat hunger and support those in need.
