First Round of Gypsy Moth Treatments Completed
Indiana Ag Connection - 05/22/2020

The first round of aerial treatments to slow the spread of gypsy moths in Huntington and Porter counties was completed Thursday.

Treatments involved aerial application of the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk). Btk occurs naturally in the soil. It is applied into the treetops in gypsy moth infested areas and kills the caterpillars as they feed on leaves.

A second aerial application of Btk is scheduled for the week of May 24 in Huntington and Porter counties. In mid to late June, mating disruption treatments targeting the adult moths are scheduled to occur in Huntington and Marshall Counties.

The gypsy moth is one of North America's most devastating invasive forest pests. For more information, call 1-866-NO-EXOTIC (663-9684) or call the local county extension office at 1-888-EXT-INFO (1-888-398-4636).
