Indiana Food Pantries Feel Strain After SUN Bucks Ends

Indiana Food Pantries Feel Strain After SUN Bucks Ends

By Andi Anderson

Indiana families are coping with a challenging summer following the state’s decision not to participate in the 2025 SUN Bucks program.

The federal grocery benefit had previously provided $120 per child each summer, helping low-income families afford essential groceries when schools are out.

State leaders cited administrative hurdles and planning issues as reasons for opting out this year. However, the decision has led to growing concerns among community organizations, food pantries, and families.

Without SUN Bucks, many households are experiencing longer lines at food pantries and fewer options for securing nutritious food.

Community leaders reported that the absence of SUN Bucks has left a noticeable gap in food access. The Indy Hunger Network emphasized that the missing funds have increased pressure on local food pantries already serving high numbers of families in need.

To help offset the loss, Indiana expanded its network of summer meal sites, allowing for the distribution of prepackaged meals that did not require daily pickups.

While this temporary measure helped some families, many of these programs are scheduled to wind down as schools prepare for the new academic year. This will further reduce food access in urban, suburban, and rural communities.

In response to the growing need, organizations like the Indy Hunger Network and other community partners continue to assist families through resources such as the Community Compass app.

This tool helps users locate nearby meal sites and grocery assistance programs, providing critical information for those seeking help.

The situation highlights the challenges faced by food banks and community organizations when state and federal support programs are not fully utilized. As families prepare for the school year, many are hoping for expanded assistance and a return of programs like SUN Bucks to relieve pressure on local food systems.
