For many years, college graduates in the Midwest moved to coastal cities in search of better career opportunities. However, Indianapolis is now changing this trend by creating strong job opportunities in agriculture and life sciences.
The region has set a goal to generate 100,000 new jobs in these sectors over the next decade. Major employers such as Corveta, Beck’s, and Elanco are actively expanding. Nineteen companies have agreed to raise average wages to $45 per hour, which is expected to be a new record for the city.
The demand for skilled workers is already rising quickly. Employers estimate they will need around 13,000 new workers by next year. This shows that job growth is happening faster than the number of available workers.
Indianapolis is not only focused on job creation but also on helping young professionals start their careers. A key initiative is the apprenticeship pathway offered through INCAP. This program allows students and recent graduates to gain paid training, earn professional credentials, and even complete degrees. It provides a strong start for those entering the agriculture and bioscience industries.
In addition, the city offers a supportive environment for businesses. Small-business networks help agriculture startups and suppliers connect with experts, find new customers, and access training. This creates a complete ecosystem where businesses and employees can grow together.
The city also offers an attractive lifestyle. Affordable living costs and access to nature make it an appealing option for young professionals. At the same time, it provides urban facilities such as transportation, parks, and growing infrastructure.
"Indy balances a practical location central to growers with strong commitment to agricultural and bioscience industries," says Blake Talbert, Title – BI Data Analyst, with – Keystone Cooperative, Indianapolis, who studied Computer Science & Data Science at Franklin College.
"The city is close to home for me, and the low cost of living made starting a career here an easy choice. You get access to the amenities of a city, including a growing trail network, without ever being far from the natural beauty of Southern Indiana's parks and forests."
Overall, Indianapolis is becoming a strong center for agriculture and bioscience careers. With job growth, training opportunities, and a supportive environment, it is attracting and retaining young talent.
