Tree Climbing Pros Demonstrate Safety Mastery

By Andi Anderson

The 2026 Indiana Tree Climbing Championship will take place on September 26 and 27, providing professional arborists with a valuable opportunity to demonstrate their climbing abilities, safety practices, and technical expertise. The event combines competition, education, and industry networking while highlighting the important role arborists play in maintaining healthy and safe trees.

The championship is designed to simulate the real working conditions faced by arborists in the field. Through a series of challenging events, participants can showcase their professional skills while learning about the latest climbing methods and equipment innovations. Similar competitions are held around the world to encourage skill development and improve safety standards within the arboriculture industry.

The event also helps strengthen connections among arborists, companies, and industry organizations. By bringing professionals together, it promotes knowledge sharing and encourages the adoption of modern techniques that improve performance and workplace safety.

Contestants will compete in five preliminary events that test different aspects of tree climbing and rescue operations. These events include Work Climb, Aerial Rescue, Throwline, Ascent Event, and Speed Climb. Each challenge is designed to assess practical skills, efficiency, and safe working practices.

The competitors with the highest combined scores in the preliminary rounds will advance to the final championship round, known as the Masters’ Challenge. Winners will receive prizes sponsored by ArborMaster and gain recognition for their outstanding performance and professionalism.

In addition to the competition, the event serves as an educational platform for both participants and spectators. Demonstrations help the public understand the expertise, training, and safety measures required to perform professional tree work. The championship highlights the dedication and skill needed to work safely at height.

Sponsorship opportunities are available through the Indiana Arborist Association's Annual Sponsorship Program, which supports the event and other industry activities. Meal sponsorships and in-kind donations are also welcomed to help make the championship a success.

All in-state competitors must be current members of the Indiana Arborist Association Chapter to participate. Climbers and volunteers who register before August 31, 2026, will receive event shirts, while supplies last. Registration will remain open until September 19, 2026.

Organizers have noted that weather conditions may affect the event schedule, and postponement or cancellation may occur if necessary. In such cases, refunds will be provided according to event guidelines.

The Indiana Arborist Association also recognizes Alison Gresham, Chair of the Climbing Competition, and her husband Brian for their dedication and leadership in organizing the championship. Their efforts help create a professional, educational, and engaging experience for all participants and attendees.
