A special Melon Tasting and Field Day will provide Indiana produce growers, wholesale buyers, and industry partners with an excellent opportunity to connect, learn, and explore new business opportunities. The event is designed to strengthen relationships across the produce industry while highlighting the latest developments in melon and watermelon production.
The program will take place on July 28, 2026, at the Purdue Extension Food Safety Training Hub in Vincennes, Indiana. Participants are encouraged to register in advance and take advantage of the educational and networking opportunities available throughout the day.
The event will begin with registration and networking, allowing attendees to meet other growers, buyers, and agricultural professionals. Following the welcome session and program overview, participants will be introduced to growers, buyers, and seed company representatives. These interactions can help build valuable industry connections and encourage collaboration within the fresh produce sector.
One of the main attractions of the event will be the melon and watermelon tasting session. Attendees will have the chance to sample a variety of fresh products and learn about diverse melon and watermelon cultivars. The session will feature information shared by Wenjing Guan, Researcher, who will discuss different varieties and current research efforts related to melon production.
Visitors will also participate in a guided tour of melon and watermelon research plots. The field tour will offer an up-close look at ongoing studies and production practices, helping growers learn about innovative methods that could improve crop quality, productivity, and market potential.
Following the field activities, participants will enjoy lunch and informal networking. This relaxed setting will provide additional opportunities for growers, buyers, researchers, and industry representatives to exchange ideas and discuss future opportunities within the agricultural sector.
In the afternoon, attendees will tour the Purdue Food Safety Training Hub. During this session, Scott Monroe, Purdue Food Safety Training Hub Representative, will provide insights into food safety education and training resources available to producers and industry stakeholders.
