Livestock producers in Indiana will have an opportunity to learn advanced animal handling techniques through two specialized stockmanship training programs scheduled for September 2026.
The programs are being organized by Purdue Extension, the Indiana Forage Council, the Indiana Beef Cattle Association, and the Indiana Sheep Association to help producers strengthen their livestock management skills and improve farm performance.
The training sessions will be held at the Southern Indiana Purdue Agricultural Center in Dubois, Indiana. The featured instructor is Curt Pate, industry expert from Ryegate, Montana, who is widely recognized for his extensive experience in livestock handling and management. Through years of working with producers across the country, Pate has demonstrated how proper stockmanship can improve animal welfare while also increasing operational efficiency and profitability.
The programs are designed to provide practical, hands-on learning experiences for participants. Producers will gain a better understanding of livestock behavior and learn handling practices that reduce animal stress, improve movement, and create safer working environments for both animals and handlers.
Two separate training events are planned. The first program, focused on beef cattle and small ruminants, will take place on September 25, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The second program, dedicated to beef cattle management, will be held on September 26, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
During both events, Curt Pate will discuss the financial advantages of effective livestock handling. Proper stockmanship can help reduce injuries, improve animal performance, and increase productivity on farms. Participants will also learn techniques that can contribute to better herd management and long-term business success.
A meal will be provided at both programs, allowing attendees additional opportunities to network and exchange ideas with fellow livestock producers and industry professionals. The cost to attend is $45 per person, making the events accessible to a wide range of producers interested in enhancing their skills.
Registration is required before attending. Producers can complete registration online through the events section of the Indiana Beef Association website. Questions regarding the programs may be directed to Jason Tower, Purdue Extension representative, who is available to provide additional event information.
The organizers encourage all beef cattle and small ruminant producers to participate. Whether individuals are new to livestock production or have years of experience, the training offers valuable knowledge that can be applied immediately on the farm.
