ILRI Vision 2030 Drives Future Livestock Innovation

ILRI Vision 2030 Drives Future Livestock Innovation

By Andi Anderson

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is highlighting its Vision 2030 strategy to address some of the most important challenges facing global livestock production.

Through scientific research, innovation, and collaborative partnerships, ILRI aims to improve food security, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability while supporting livestock producers around the world.

The seminar features Professor Appolinaire Djikeng, Director General of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), a globally recognized scientist with more than two decades of experience in research and institutional development.

His work focuses on genomics and its application in agriculture, livestock production, human health, and environmental sustainability.

Throughout his career, Djikeng has contributed to several major initiatives designed to strengthen agricultural development. He co-founded the African Animal Breeding Network, which promotes advances in livestock genetics, and the African Biogenome Project, an initiative supporting biodiversity conservation across Africa.

He also serves on various international science advisory boards and has received several honors, including the Nelson Mandela Peace Award.

The seminar examines the critical role livestock play in supporting livelihoods and nutrition worldwide. Nearly 1.3 billion people depend on livestock systems for income, food, and economic stability, particularly small-scale producers across Africa and Asia.

However, these systems continue to face challenges from disease outbreaks, climate change, environmental pressures, and increasing demand for animal-based food products.

As part of the presentation, Djikeng will outline ILRI’s strategic direction through 2030 and discuss the scientific research supporting this vision. Key research areas include animal health, livestock genetics, feed and nutrition management, climate resilience, environmental sustainability, socioeconomics, and policy development.

The seminar will also demonstrate how scientific discoveries can help create more productive, efficient, and resilient livestock systems. Advancements in breeding, disease management, nutrition, and sustainable farming practices are expected to play an important role in meeting future food needs while protecting natural resources.

A major focus of the discussion will be the value of partnerships in driving meaningful agricultural progress. ILRI works closely with CGIAR centers, universities, private-sector organizations, governments, and national research programs to ensure research findings are translated into practical solutions for farmers and livestock producers.

In addition, the event will explore opportunities for future collaboration between ILRI and academic institutions. These partnerships can support livestock system transformation, knowledge sharing, workforce training, and capacity development.

By combining science, innovation, and global cooperation, ILRI’s Vision 2030 seeks to create stronger livestock systems that support better lives, improved food security, and a healthier planet for future generations.

A reception at Leopold's Landing will follow the seminar, providing participants with further networking and collaboration opportunities.
