Edgar Cahoon recognized for impactful plant science research

By Jamie Martin

Edgar Cahoon, a renowned biochemist at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, has been honoured as a National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Fellow.

This recognition, the highest distinction for academic inventors, celebrates his groundbreaking contributions to agriculture and biotechnology.

Cahoon, the George Holmes Professor of Biochemistry and Director of the Center for Plant Science Innovation, has developed transformative inventions in plant lipid biotechnology. His work focuses on creating innovative oils with enhanced properties for food, feed, and industrial applications. With 36 U.S. patents, his research has significantly improved crop nutrition, industrial uses, and agronomic performance.

“Our university has this philosophy of doing great science to make discoveries and thinking about how we can apply those discoveries to benefit agriculture and society,” Cahoon said.

A pioneer in sustainable aquaculture, Cahoon developed land-based substitutes for fish oil by engineering omega-3-rich soybeans.

This innovation supports the aquaculture industry’s sustainability. He also improved plant-based vitamin E content, aiding shelf life and nutritional quality. His research contributed to biofortified crops like "golden sorghum," which addresses vitamin A deficiencies in Africa.

With over 180 published papers and numerous global recognitions, Cahoon's work extends beyond research. He mentors students through initiatives like the Crop-to-Food Innovation program. His innovations have been widely cited, earning accolades like the Outstanding Research and Creative Activity honor.

Cahoon will receive the prestigious award at the NAI Annual Conference in Atlanta, further solidifying his legacy of impactful innovation.
