Indiana Officials Urge Caution While Driving Near Farm Equipment

As planting season progresses, Indiana State Department of Agriculture and law enforcement officials are urging drivers to exercise caution while driving on county roads and highways due to the presence of large farm equipment. These machines are slow-moving and can pose a risk to motorists. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were three vehicle crashes involving farm equipment in Indiana last year, resulting in two deaths.

To stay safe, remember these tips:

Watch for farm machinery and be aware that operators may not see approaching vehicles.

Slow down and keep a safe distance behind farm equipment.

Stay a safe distance away for better visibility and to avoid turning accidents.

Use caution when passing and ensure the road is wide enough with no oncoming traffic.

Stay alert and avoid distractions.

Farmers can also help keep everyone safe by using the necessary lighting and warning signs and avoiding travel during early morning and evening hours. Indiana law requires operators of slow-moving vehicles to pull over to the right to allow safe passing when three or more vehicles are behind them.
