Indiana's Meat Animal Cash Receipts Rise in 2022

The latest data from the USDA's Indiana Field Office shows that the state's meat animal cash receipts experienced growth in 2022. Cattle and calf receipts increased by 14% from the previous year, totaling $460 million in 2022. However, cattle and calf marketings dropped by 4% to 343.7 million pounds. Meanwhile, hog cash receipts grew by 6% to $1.56 billion in 2022, with all hog and pig marketings totaling 2.16 billion pounds, down 2% from 2021.

Nationally, cash receipts from marketings of cattle and calves also increased by 18% to $86.1 billion in 2022, with all cattle and calf marketings totaling 61.6 billion pounds. Similarly, cash receipts from hogs and pigs grew by 9% to $30.6 billion, with marketings totaling 42.1 billion pounds.

The increase in Indiana's meat animal cash receipts reflects the state's thriving livestock industry. With more than 14,000 farms and over 250,000 jobs related to agriculture, Indiana is a significant contributor to the nation's food supply. The state's top agricultural products include corn, soybeans, and hogs, among others.

Indiana's growth in meat animal cash receipts is a positive sign for the state's economy and agriculture industry, as it shows resilience in the face of pandemic-related challenges. The data also highlights the importance of supporting and investing in the state's livestock industry to maintain its growth and success.
