Indiana Corn Acreage Up 400,000 from 2019

Indiana farmers planted 5.40 million acres of corn for all purposes in 2020, an increase of 400,000 acres from last year, according to USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office. Planting began in some areas of Indiana on schedule in mid-April but was delayed in other places by snow and cold weather. Corn planting picked up throughout May and was 87 percent complete by May 31, ahead of the five-year average. There was adequate soil moisture throughout the planting period. Corn acreage expected to be harvested for grain totaled 5.25 million acres, 430,000 acres above last year.

Soybean acreage planted or to be planted for all purposes in Indiana is estimated at 5.70 million acres, 6 percent above the 2019 planted acreage level. Soybean acreage for harvest is expected to total 5.68 million acres, also up 6 percent from a year earlier.

Winter wheat planted acres of 360,000 in Indiana are up 9 percent from the previous year. Area expected to be harvested for grain, at 310,000 acres, is up 19 percent from a year ago. Wheat yield and production will be updated in the July 10 Crop Report. Producers expect to harvest 500,000 acres of dry hay in 2020. Alfalfa hay acreage, at 220,000 acres, is unchanged from last year, and all other dry hay acreage, at 280,000 acres, is down 7 percent from 2019.

Nationally, corn planted area for all purposes in 2020 is estimated at 92.0 million acres, up 3 percent or 2.31 million acres from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is expected to be up or unchanged in 28 of the 48 estimating States. Area harvested for grain, at 84.0 million acres, is up 3 percent from last year.

U.S. soybean planted area for 2020 is estimated at 83.8 million acres, up 10 percent from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is up or unchanged in 24 of the 29 estimating States.

The 2020 winter wheat planted area in the U.S., at 30.6 million acres, is down 2 percent from last year and down 1 percent from the previous estimate. Of this total, about 21.5 million acres are Hard Red Winter, 5.63 million acres are Soft Red Winter, and 3.42 million acres are White Winter.
