Temperatures plunged as harvest season wrapped up for much of the State, according to Nathanial Warenski, state statistician, USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office. Soil moisture levels decreased slightly from the previous week, with 49 percent of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.
The average temperature for the week was 29.6 degrees Fahrenheit, 12.9 degrees below normal for the State. The amount of rainfall varied from none to 0.96 inches over the week. The statewide average precipitation was 0.15 inches, 0.65 inches below normal. There were 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday.
Winter weather took hold this week as abnormally cold temperatures rolled through the State. Corn for grain harvest progress was all but complete with moisture content of corn at harvest estimated at 17 percent. Winter wheat emergence surpassed its five-year average pace with 63 percent of the crop rated in good to excellent condition.
Other activities for the week included winter preparations and lime and fertilizer applications.
