Legacy Taste of the Garden: Cultivating Change in Food Deserts

In the heartland of Indiana, Legacy Taste of the Garden, an agricultural business is sowing the seeds of change. Rooted in the rich heritage of African American farming, this family-owned enterprise is tackling food deserts and empowering communities by providing access to fresh, locally grown produce.

With a mission to bridge the gap between local producers and consumers, Legacy Taste of the Garden operates a farmstand in Princeton, Indiana, and distributes its products across the state. However, its impact extends beyond mere distribution. Recognizing the importance of education, Legacy Taste of the Garden partner with community organizations to teach young people in food deserts about the fundamentals of farming, cultivating a newfound appreciation for agriculture and the connection between food and health.

Furthermore, Legacy Taste of the Garden is committed to supporting other BIPOC farmers across the state. Through the Indiana Black Loam Conferences, they bring together farmers and relevant agencies to educate them about available resources, programs, grants, and loans. By facilitating these connections, the business empowers farmers and producers to maximize their potential and make informed decisions for their operations.

Denise Jamerson, a passionate advocate for women in agriculture, believes that visibility and seizing opportunities are crucial. Her leadership and participation in various training programs have equipped her with the tools to amplify her voice and inspire others to do the same. Her son founded Legacy Taste of the Garden.

Through their dedication to education and community empowerment, Legacy Taste of the Garden is cultivating a brighter future, nourishing both bodies and minds in the fight against food deserts.
