Diverse Farms Keep America Growing Strong

Diverse Farms Keep America Growing Strong

By Jamie Martin

Agriculture in the United States reflects the country’s vast diversity. From Western ranches and Midwestern grain farms to Southern orchards and Northeastern dairies, each contributes to a secure food system. The variety of farms across the nation ensures Americans have access to fresh produce and dairy year-round.

The American Farm Bureau supports farmers of all types in every state and territory. Nearly two-thirds of its delegates represent small- and medium-sized farms, with 97% classified as family operations. However, many of these family-run farms face mounting challenges due to economic and policy barriers.

Thousands of farms have closed in recent years, and more are at risk. With government shutdowns delaying aid and loan access, smaller farms struggle to survive without USDA market updates or local assistance. These setbacks weaken the entire agricultural network.

Economic conditions have also worsened, with rising costs, falling crop prices, and disrupted trade hurting farm incomes. The Farm Bureau has called on leaders to reopen markets, approve the farm bill, and address critical labor shortages.

Despite current challenges, farmers remain resilient. Innovation, policy reform, and the inclusion of young and beginning farmers can create a sustainable future. “Together, we can help farms of all sizes succeed,” the Farm Bureau leader emphasized. By supporting one another, America can remain strong and food independent for generations.
