Farmers Still Waiting for New Farm Bill

Farmers Still Waiting for New Farm Bill

By Jamie Martin

Farmers and ranchers across the United States are still awaiting a comprehensive new farm bill, despite recent financial support provided by Congress’s budget reconciliation deal.

The recent budget package, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, invested around $66 billion in agriculture. Much of this funding—about $60 billion—went towards strengthening risk management tools and modernizing the farm safety net.

This included extending commodity support programs through the 2031 crop year and raising statutory reference prices for key commodities.

The bill also boosted premium support for beginning farmers and ranchers, helping them manage risks more effectively.

However, several vital farm programs remain in need of attention. Among them is the Conservation Reserve Program, which supports soil conservation and land management efforts.

Additionally, funding for rural broadband remains a critical issue for rural communities, as well as ongoing support for research and extension programs.

Another pressing concern is updating agricultural policy, including efforts to address regulatory issues like Proposition 12. These updates are essential for modernizing farm practices and ensuring long-term sustainability for the sector.

Congress is actively working on drafting the new farm bill, with both the House and Senate Agriculture Committees holding hearings to prioritize key agricultural policies. The goal is to move the bill forward in the fall, ensuring that important programs and policies are addressed promptly.

While the budget deal offered substantial support for farmers, the need for a comprehensive farm bill remains. The farming community continues to call for legislative action that will secure conservation efforts, enhance rural connectivity, support innovation, and protect the future of American agriculture.
