Indiana farmers have a new ally in their quest for agricultural success. The Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) has collaborated with partners across the state to launch the "Indiana's Mississippi River Basin Soil Sampling Program." This initiative aims to support farmers in optimizing soil health, boosting yields, and safeguarding the environment.
Lieutenant Governor Crouch, Indiana's Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, highlighted the program's significance in empowering Hoosier farmers. By participating, farmers can assess their soil's nutrient composition, ensuring precise fertilizer application.
The ISDA advocates the 4R Nutrient Stewardship framework, emphasizing the "Right Source, Right Rate, Right Time, and Right Place" for nutrient management. Soil sampling is a critical first step in this process, providing valuable insights into soil fertility.
Regular soil sampling enables farmers to make informed decisions, reduce fertilizer inputs, and increase profitability. It also contributes to environmental protection by minimizing nutrient runoff. This program aligns with Indiana's State Nutrient Reduction Strategy.

The program encompasses various field types, prioritizing those that have not been previously sampled or sampled irregularly. Farmers can register online via ISDA's website or by contacting soilsampling@isda.in.gov until April 17, 2024.
