Free Virtual Gardening Class Helps Beginners Start Growing Food

By Andi Anderson

Growing fresh food at home has become a popular goal for many people, but getting started can sometimes feel confusing. To support new gardeners, a free virtual class called Get Your Garden Started will be held on Tuesday, April 28 at 9:00 a.m. CST. The 90‑minute Zoom session is designed especially for beginners who want simple and clear guidance on how to start their first garden with confidence.

The class is suitable for anyone, whether they have a large backyard, a small balcony, a patio, or a raised bed. The event focuses on easy, practical methods that help new gardeners understand the basics of creating a successful garden at home.

As the founder of Beats, Beds, Browns, Joe Skibbie explains, “Many people want to start gardening but feel overwhelmed by where to begin. This class breaks the process down into simple steps so anyone can start growing their own food with confidence.”

Participants will learn step‑by‑step instructions for planning a garden, preparing soil, selecting seeds, choosing the right planting location, and caring for plants throughout the growing season. The session includes several helpful topics aimed at simplifying gardening for first‑timers.

Topics covered in the class include:

  • Planning Your Garden: Understanding growing zones, selecting a suitable location, and designing a layout
  • Soil & Planting Basics: Testing soil, improving soil quality, selecting seeds, and planting correctly
  • Choosing the Right Location: Learning how sunlight, soil conditions, and space affect plant growth
  • Watering & Maintenance: Setting up watering systems, managing weeds, and handling pests
  • Harvesting & Beyond: Identifying when crops are ready to harvest and how to pick them properly

In addition to the main lessons, participants will receive bonus content on fall and winter gardening strategies, composting tips, and opportunities to connect with wider gardening communities.

The class is free to attend, but space is limited, so advance registration is required.
