Indiana's master plan for container trade excellence

Indiana's master plan for container trade excellence

Governor Eric Holcomb recently inaugurated the Indiana Container Shipping Conference and Intermodal Rail Tour, marking a significant step towards enhancing the state's global trade through improved container shipping capacities.

The event, a collaboration among the Ports of Indiana, Indiana Soybean Alliance (ISA), and Indiana Corn Marketing Council (ICMC), focuses on expanding Indiana's container ports and agricultural exports.

“I commend Indiana’s statewide agricultural sector and port leaders for convening this important discussion about growing Indiana’s global trade by expanding our international container shipping opportunities,” Governor Holcomb stated during the conference.

This statement underscores the state's commitment to leveraging its agricultural heritage and resources for economic growth.

The conference showcased discussions among leaders from various sectors, including business, agriculture, and transportation.

They explored development strategies for new container ports and ways to increase agricultural exports. A significant highlight was a tour of the Indiana Rail Road’s Senate Avenue Intermodal Yard.

Courtney Kingery, CEO of ISA and ICMC, emphasized the need for better infrastructure. “Improving our infrastructure to support local containers terminals can provide Hoosier farmers with access to overseas customers,” she explained.

This reflects the ongoing efforts to facilitate efficient international shipments of identity-preserved commodities.

The initiative also aims to tackle the challenges presented by the lack of container terminals in Indiana compared to neighboring states.

Jody Peacock, CEO of Ports of Indiana, noted, “We don’t handle containers today due to regulatory and market challenges, but containers represent the highest-valued and fastest-growing cargo for ports around the world.”

With the Ports of Indiana Commission's recent approval of "The Indiana Container Initiative," the state is poised to pursue the development of international container facilities aggressively.

This plan is expected to dramatically increase the volume of agricultural products shipped globally from Indiana.

The initiative aims to enhance the existing infrastructure and tap into the burgeoning global demand for specialty crops and agricultural products. “The market potential of shipping to global customers could be up to 11,600 containers of $165 million in product value between soybean and corn commodities and co-products annually,” Kingery projected.

This ambitious project positions Indiana to become a more significant player in the global container shipping arena, promising substantial economic benefits and stronger international connections for the state’s agricultural sector.
