Students interested in sustainable agriculture are finding meaningful learning opportunities through programs that combine classroom education with real world experience.
One such student is pursuing studies through Purdue Agriculture, where a strong focus on sustainability, innovation, and hands on learning helps shape future careers in food and farming.
From an early age, this student developed a deep connection to nature through activities such as gardening, cooking, hunting, and foraging. These interests naturally led to the study of sustainable food and farming systems, a program that brings together environmental care, food production, and community responsibility.
The program emphasizes learning by doing, helping students understand how farming can work in balance with nature while meeting global food needs.
Throughout her studies, she has taken part in a wide range of practical activities. These include growing plants in greenhouses, harvesting crops, collecting soil samples, caring for livestock, and supporting daily farm operations.
Much of this work takes place at the Purdue Student Farm, where students learn crop planning, post harvest handling, and how to manage a community supported agriculture program that serves local families.
Educational experiences also extend beyond campus. Attending the Indiana Small Farm Conference allowed her to connect with farmers who are actively improving sustainability on their operations.
These conversations helped her understand how classroom lessons apply directly to real farming challenges.
Professional experience has been strengthened through a summer internship with the Posey County Soil and Water Conservation District.
During this time, she supported conservation programs, helped with environmental education, assisted with field checks, and worked with farmers on regenerative agriculture projects. She also led community workshops and supported youth education efforts.
As graduation approaches, she continues to explore future paths. Possible goals include operating a small farm business or working in Extension to support sustainable farming and local food systems.
Her journey shows how hands on education, community involvement, and practical experience can help students build a strong and flexible future in agriculture.
For students considering agriculture education, her message is clear. Get involved, explore opportunities, and learn by doing. Sustainable agriculture offers many paths for those willing to engage and grow.
