USDA allocates $22 million to aid underserved and veteran farmers

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has unveiled a new funding initiative amounting to approximately $22.3 million aimed at assisting underserved and veteran farmers. This funding is available through the 2501 Program, which is managed by USDA's Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement (OPPE). Since its inception over 30 years ago, the 2501 Program has significantly enhanced outreach and support to these key agricultural groups.

The program is designed to empower community-based organizations, nonprofit groups, institutions of higher education, and Tribal entities that are actively involved in providing essential training and technical assistance. These efforts are crucial in helping farmers and ranchers own and operate successful farms and include connecting them to vital USDA programs and services.

Eligible organizations are encouraged to apply for this funding via grants.gov by the deadline on July 5, 2024. The USDA is committed to continuing its support through this program, which has already facilitated more than 615 grants totaling over $194 million in awards since 2010.

Also, the USDA is calling for qualified individuals to serve as peer reviewers for the 2501 program proposals for fiscal year 2024. This role is critical in ensuring a fair and comprehensive review of the proposals submitted. Those interested in participating as reviewers are advised to submit their credentials by May 22, 2024.

With initiatives like Farm to Table Guam and the Quivira Coalition making significant impacts through the 2501 funding, the program’s expansion demonstrates USDA’s ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive and sustainable agricultural sector.
