Each year, Indiana pays tribute to its rich agricultural heritage by honoring family farms that have been operated by the same family for 100, 150, or 200 years. These farms are recognized with the prestigious Centennial, Sesquicentennial, or Bicentennial Hoosier Homestead Award.
This week, during the Indiana State Fair, 104 families were celebrated for their unwavering dedication to agriculture and their efforts to preserve their family farms across generations.
State Representative Wendy McNamara emphasized the importance of these farms to Indiana’s agricultural sector, stating, “Family-owned farms are the backbone of agriculture in our state.
Hoosiers are truly blessed to have families running farms for over 100 years, and I’m glad we can honor their efforts with this award.” Her words resonate with the pride and respect the state holds for these families who have contributed so much to Indiana’s economy and culture.
The Hoosier Homestead Award program, which began in 1976, has been a significant part of recognizing the lasting impact of these farms on Indiana’s growth.
State Representative David Abbott highlighted this by noting, “The agricultural industry is thriving in Indiana, thanks to Hoosier farm families dedicated to preserving their legacy farms. Congratulations to these local farmers, and I wish you continued success.”
Over the past 45 years, more than 6,000 farms have received this honor, a testament to the resilience and commitment of Indiana’s farming families.
State Representative Craig Snow acknowledged the hard work behind maintaining these farms, stating, “There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to keep family farms running for generations. It often means long days and nights, so it’s great when these families are recognized for their hard work.”
These 104 honored families represent the heart of Indiana’s agricultural tradition, and their recognition at the State Fair is a reminder of the vital role family farms play in sustaining and nurturing the state’s farming legacy.
