Veteran Turns Beekeeping into Healing Hive

Veteran Turns Beekeeping into Healing Hive

By Andi Anderson

The American Farm Bureau’s Veteran Farmer Award of Excellence highlights the impact of veterans in agriculture. Retired Army Colonel Joe Ricker of Indiana, honored as the award’s first recipient in 2025, is a shining example of service and community commitment.

Ricker leads At Ease Orchard, a nonprofit farm that introduces veterans, first responders, and their families to farming and beekeeping. The orchard provides a space for healing, learning, and reconnecting with community life through agriculture.

This summer, Ricker showcased his work at the Indiana State Fair during the “Taste From Indiana Farms” event, hosted by Indiana Farm Bureau. Visitors sampled honey sticks from his farm and learned how nectar sources like buckwheat, wildflowers, and goldenrod influence flavors. The activity highlighted both agricultural education and community engagement.

At Ease Orchard also offers practical training. During the beekeeping season, participants receive hands-on experience with hive management, guided by mentors who understand the challenges of post-service life.

September events at the farm include composting lessons, lavender harvesting, pruning workshops, and an open honey harvest where both new learners and experienced beekeepers can take part.

Beyond training, Ricker organizes gleaning events where veterans collect leftover vegetables after harvest. These are donated to local food pantries, helping fight hunger while supporting families in need.

On the digital front, Ricker recently launched the VetFarm Network Podcast, which shares success stories and practical farming advice for veterans and anyone exploring agriculture. This initiative broadens his mission, making it accessible to audiences nationwide.

The recognition and cash prize from the Farm Bureau’s award have helped expand these projects. Yet for Ricker, the true reward is in building awareness for At Ease Orchard’s mission to support veterans and strengthen community ties through agriculture.

The next Veteran Farmer Award of Excellence will be presented in January 2026 at the AFBF Convention in Anaheim, California. The honoree will receive $10,000 and national recognition for their contributions.
