Grant funds diverse food hub in Logansport Indiana

By Andi Anderson

A new food hub in Logansport, Indiana, aims to unite the community through agriculture and inclusivity. Supported by a $5 million grant from the Lilly Endowment and spearheaded by the Cass County Community Foundation, this initiative will transform Heritage Park into a vibrant space for all residents.

The project features a permanent farmers market, an incubator kitchen for small food businesses, and community garden plots. Deanna Crispen, the foundation’s president and CEO, emphasized that the project’s primary goal is to bring people together through food while celebrating the town’s immigrant history.

“The whole idea behind this proposal was bringing people together through food,” Crispen said.

To foster inclusivity, planners are collaborating with local minority groups. Purdue University’s Extension program will also contribute by teaching agricultural techniques to new residents, enabling families to grow traditional and local foods.

Heritage Park, already home to the town’s immigration statue, was chosen as the project’s location to honor Logansport’s immigrant history. Crispen described the space as a future gathering place for the community.

Construction is set to begin next spring, with local organizations and city officials coordinating logistics, including relocating the farmers market during the development phase. The food hub is expected to become a centerpiece of the community, providing economic opportunities and pride for years to come.

This innovative project highlights the power of agriculture and food in uniting communities and celebrating diversity while paving the way for economic and cultural growth in Logansport.
