Harvest season road safety

Harvest season road safety

By Andi Anderson

As we transition into the harvest season, it's essential to keep road safety in mind, no matter where you live. Agriculture is a vital industry across many regions, and during this time of year, you're more likely to encounter substantial farm equipment on the roads. Whether you're in a rural area or a more urban environment, it's crucial to be aware and considerate of the challenges farmers face as they work diligently to bring in their crops.

Here are some key tips to ensure road safety for everyone:

  • Stay Cautious Around Heavy Machinery: Farmers utilize a variety of large equipment, including combines, semi-trucks, and trailers. Keep a safe distance from these vehicles in case they need to make sudden stops.
  • Plan Your Travel Time: Give yourself extra time to reach your destination when you know you'll be sharing the road with slow-moving farm machinery. Consider alternative routes to avoid delays and ensure a stress-free journey.
  • Watch for Slow-Moving Vehicle Signs: Look out for the distinctive orange triangle with a red reflective border, indicating that the vehicle travels at 25 mph or less. This sign serves as a warning to other drivers, so exercise extra caution when you encounter it.
  • Passing Farm Equipment Safely: When attempting to pass large farm machinery, always check for oncoming traffic. Farmers will often pull over to let you pass when it's safe. However, be aware that they might be preparing for a wide left turn. To ensure everyone's safety, slow down, pay attention to turn signals, and don't assume the farmer can see you. Wait until you're sure it's safe to pass.
  • Avoid High-Risk Areas: Never attempt to pass farm equipment near intersections, railroad crossings, bridges, tunnels, or on curving roads. These areas pose a higher risk for accidents, so exercise patience and wait for a safer opportunity to pass.
  • Supporting Our Farmers: Remember that farmers play a critical role in providing the food we all rely on. Show your appreciation by giving them the space they need to reach their destinations safely. By slowing down, staying alert, and looking out for each other on the roads, we can ensure a successful harvest season and maintain road safety for all.

Whether you're in a bustling city or a quiet rural community, these road safety principles are universal and should be followed to protect both farmers and drivers during the busy harvest season. To learn more about fall road safety, you can visit your local government or state's department of agriculture website. Let's all do our part to make this harvest season safe and successful for everyone on the road.
