Indiana Dairy Herds Increase Milk Production in September

By Andi Anderson

Dairy herds in Indiana have reason to celebrate as they posted impressive figures in the latest USDA report for September. The state's dairy industry experienced a remarkable 3.4 percent increase in milk production, demonstrating robust growth compared to the previous year.

During September 2023, Indiana's dairy herds collectively produced a total of 365 million pounds of milk. This significant volume reflects a notable rise in milk production, emphasizing the vibrancy and expansion of the state's dairy industry.

One key contributor to this success is the increase in production per cow. The average production per cow in Indiana for September 2023 reached 1,910 pounds. This figure marks a 10-pound improvement compared to the same month in the previous year, underlining the enhanced efficiency and productivity within the state's dairy herds.

Furthermore, the dairy herd population in Indiana experienced growth. September 2023 saw an estimated 191,000 dairy cows in the state. This number reflects a notable increase of 6,000 head compared to the same period in the previous year, emphasizing the expansion of the dairy sector in Indiana.

The robust performance of Indiana's dairy industry is particularly noteworthy, considering the national context. In the 24 major dairy-producing states, milk production during September 2023 totaled 17.5 billion pounds. While this figure represents substantial production, it experienced a slight decrease compared to September 2022.

The production per cow in the 24 major dairy states averaged 1,960 pounds in September 2023. This number indicates a modest increase of 3 pounds compared to the same month in the previous year, highlighting the continuous improvement and efficiency of dairy operations.

However, it's worth noting that the number of milk cows on farms in these 24 major states saw a slight decrease. In September 2023, there were 8.91 million dairy cows in these states, reflecting a decrease of 16,000 head compared to the same period in the previous year.

Indiana's dairy industry's robust growth in September is a testament to the state's dedication to dairy farming and commitment to high-quality milk production. The combination of increased production per cow and a growing dairy herd positions Indiana favorably within the dairy sector, contributing to the state's reputation for excellent dairy products.

The positive results from Indiana's dairy industry in September 2023 serve as a promising indicator for the future of dairy farming in the state. As the industry continues to evolve and expand, it plays a vital role in both local and national dairy markets. Indiana's dairy farmers and industry professionals are actively shaping the sector's growth and development, making it a noteworthy success story within the broader U.S. dairy landscape.
