This week marks National Farmers Market Week, drawing thousands to over 8,000 farmers markets nationwide.
These markets offer fresh jams, jellies, fruits, and vegetables, fostering a sense of community and providing direct access to locally grown food. Moreover, they serve a crucial role in alleviating food insecurity.
Emily Weikert Bryant, executive director of the nonprofit Feeding Indiana’s Hungry, emphasized the long-standing partnership between the organization and the agricultural community to combat hunger.
"They’re engaging with their regional food bank or their local pantries or participating in partnerships with their industry associations, like the Million Meals program we have with the Indiana pork producers," Bryant explained. "Farmers are often quietly working in the communities to alleviate hunger for our Hoosier neighbors."
Indiana farmers markets accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, making fresh produce accessible to those in need. According to the Indiana Department of Agriculture, the state boasts over 94,000 farmers, with 94% of farms being family-owned or operated.
The USDA supports National Farmers Market Week as a means to invest in local economies and foster connections between farmers and consumers. Jenny Lester Moffitt, USDA undersecretary for marketing and regulatory programs, highlighted the importance of direct farm-to-institution sales.
"Having farmers able to sell directly to schools, hospitals, and food banks is critical," Moffitt emphasized.
Moffitt noted that farmers earn seven times more at farmers markets compared to traditional market streams. The USDA has invested over a billion dollars in local food purchase assistance for school programs, empowering communities and states to buy more local food.
Indiana farmers markets not only provide fresh, healthy food but also strengthen the local economy and support food security initiatives. During National Farmers Market Week, these markets showcase the vital role they play in communities across the state and the country.
