Indiana farmers are urged to be mindful of electrical safety during the harvest season. The increased activity and use of large equipment puts farmers and farm workers at greater risk of electrocution.
Here are some key safety tips recommended by Indiana Electric Cooperatives (IEC) for farmers and farm workers:
Be Aware of Power Lines: Always be vigilant about the presence of power lines around your work area. Power lines can sag between poles, especially on hot days. Maintain a safe distance of at least 10 feet from all power lines and power poles.
Don't Attempt to Raise Power Lines: Never try to raise power lines to allow tall equipment to pass underneath. This can be extremely dangerous and is best avoided.
Consider Antennas and Receivers: Take into account the height of your equipment, including any radio antennas and GPS receivers that may extend above the roof. Ensure they also have sufficient clearance from power lines.
Lower Portable Equipment: Before moving portable equipment like grain augers, make sure to fully lower them to avoid contact with power lines.
Use a Spotter: When moving equipment in proximity to power lines, have a spotter to help ensure your safety. If you're uncertain whether the equipment will clear the power line, find an alternative route.
Beware of Power Poles: Be cautious of power poles, as striking one can cause live power lines to drop onto your equipment.
Stay in the Cab if Contact Occurs: In the unfortunate event that your equipment comes into contact with power lines, remain in the cab and call for help. Advise others to stay away from the area to prevent further accidents.
By following these tips, farmers and farm workers can help keep themselves safe during the harvest season.
