Indiana Harvest Surges Forward



Optimal conditions for fieldwork spurred harvesting progress across much of the State, according to Nathanial Warenski, state statistician, USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office. Soil moisture levels decreased from the previous week, with 57 percent of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.

The average temperature for the week was 55.3 degrees Fahrenheit, 6.0 degrees below normal for the State. The amount of rainfall varied from none to 0.51 inches over the week. The statewide average precipitation was 0.07 inches, 0.63 inches below normal. There were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday.

Unseasonably cool and dry weather throughout much of the State spurred harvest progress. Corn denting was all but complete with 57 percent of corn and 58 percent of soybeans rated in good to excellent condition. Corn harvested for grain and soybeans harvested surged forward from the previous week. Despite impressive progress, corn harvested for grain and soybeans harvested both continued behind their respective five-year averages.

Winter wheat planting progress also continued behind its five-year average.

Some operators reported sporadic instances of frost warnings.

Livestock was reported in good condition with 41 percent of pasture rated in good to excellent condition.

Other activities for the week included maintenance of harvest equipment, pest treatments, and fence repairs.
