Indiana Poultry Industry Gives Back to Hoosiers

Indiana Poultry Industry Gives Back to Hoosiers

By Andi Anderson

Indiana's poultry industry has exemplified the spirit of giving by generously donating over 200,000 pounds of poultry products, including duck, turkey, chicken, and 172,000 dozen eggs, to Hoosiers in need over the past year. In addition to these in-kind contributions, Indiana farmers and businesses have also contributed $340,000 to organizations fighting food insecurity.

At the 76th annual Governor's Poultry Presentation at the Indiana Statehouse, Governor Eric Holcomb, Indiana State Department of Agriculture Director Don Lamb, and the Indiana State Poultry Association (ISPA) recognized the outstanding contributions of Indiana's poultry producers. Governor Holcomb commended the industry for its commitment to addressing food insecurity and its role as a significant economic driver for the state.

"Hoosier generosity is second to none, and our poultry producers are always quick to assist their neighbors," said Governor Holcomb. "It was an honor to be apart of this annual donation event and to recognize these outstanding businesses going above and beyond in their communities."

The poultry industry contributes over $15 billion in total economic activity and employs more than 12,500 Hoosiers. Indiana is a top poultry-producing state, ranking No. 1 in duck production, No. 2 in egg production, and No. 4 in turkey production. The state also boasts high-quality broiler chicken production.

ISPA members are dedicated to giving back to their communities throughout the year. These large poultry donations stem from the compassion and generosity of farming families across Indiana. As ISPA President Becky Joniskan stated, "Indiana's poultry farmers show their care and concern for the communities within which they operate and to all Hoosiers through their generous donations."

The donated items displayed at the ceremony were given to Second Helpings, a hunger relief agency in Indianapolis. This annual tradition, organized by ISPA, dates back to the late 1940s. It serves to recognize the strength of Indiana's poultry industry and the annual donations made by its members, who are responsible for producing over 95% of the chicken, duck, turkey, and eggs in Indiana.

The poultry industry's commitment to addressing food insecurity and its contributions to the state's economy are commendable. Indiana's poultry producers are truly embodying the spirit of giving back to their communities, ensuring that no one in Indiana goes hungry.
