The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has allocated $15 million in federal funds to Indiana to assist independent meat producers in expanding their operations. This significant investment aims to enhance the capacity and competitiveness of small and very small meat packers and processors in the state.
The funding will be utilized to establish a revolving loan fund administered by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture in collaboration with the Indiana Finance Authority. The loan fund will provide affordable capital to support meat expansion projects, leading to job creation, increased tax revenues, and economic growth in local communities and across Indiana.
This announcement comes as part of the USDA's broader effort to strengthen independent meat and poultry processing capacity nationwide. In total, the agency has awarded $115 million across 17 states to support 15 projects. Five awards totaling $38 million have been granted through the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program, while an additional $77 million has been allocated to 10 projects under the Meat and Poultry Intermediary Lending Program.
The USDA's investment reflects its commitment to fostering a resilient and sustainable meat production industry, while empowering small businesses and rural communities. This financial support will contribute to the long-term growth and viability of independent meat producers in Indiana.
