Indiana Seeks Nominations for 2025 Rural Preservation Award

By Andi Anderson

Indiana Landmarks and Indiana Farm Bureau are now accepting nominations for the 2025 John Arnold Award for Rural Preservation. This award celebrates historic farms and farm buildings that have been preserved while continuing agricultural operations.

Recognizing Historic Farms

Since 1992, more than 30 historic farms have received this award. The 2024 winner, Old Fashioned Garden in Miami County, was recognized for its commitment to preserving rural history.

Anyone, including farm owners and community members, can submit nominations. The award will be presented at the Indiana State Fair during the Celebration of Agriculture in August.

Nomination Requirements

Nominations should include:

  • A brief history of the farm and descriptions of significant historic structures such as barns, farmhouses, and landscape features.
  • Details on how historic structures continue to be used in modern farming operations.
  • High-resolution photographs showcasing the farm’s preservation efforts.

Honoring Rural Heritage

The award is named in memory of John Arnold (1955-1991), a Rush County farmer who combined modern farming with a deep respect for rural history. Winners receive an outdoor marker and feature coverage in Indiana Preservation magazine.

Submit Nominations

Nominations can be submitted at indianalandmarks.org/john-arnold-award-rural-preservation. The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2025.
