Indiana Welcomes New State Vet - Dr. Shipman

By Andi Anderson

Dr. Kyle Shipman, an alumnus of Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (class of 2015), has officially been named Indiana’s new State Veterinarian. The appointment was decided by the 11-member Indiana State Board of Animal Health during their January meeting and later approved by the governor. Dr. Shipman had been serving in an interim capacity since November after his predecessor, Dr. Bret Marsh, retired to become the dean of Purdue’s veterinary college.

In his new role, Dr. Shipman will act as the chief administrative officer for two primary animal health boards under the Indiana Center for Animal Policy. The first board, the Indiana State Board of Animal Health, handles daily operations such as inspecting meat, poultry, and dairy products; managing animal health programs; and coordinating disaster response efforts. The second board, the Indiana Board of Veterinary Medicine, oversees licensing, registration, and disciplinary actions for veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians across the state.

“My goal is to continue to deliver the high standards of service that the citizens of Indiana and the veterinary profession have come to expect from our team,” said Dr. Shipman. “I look forward to meeting Hoosiers in their communities statewide and partnering with stakeholders to safeguard Indiana’s animals, citizens and food supply.”

A dedicated Purdue graduate, Dr. Shipman earned his Bachelor of Science in animal sciences from the College of Agriculture before obtaining his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2015. Soon after graduation, he joined the Indiana State Board of Animal Health and assumed the role of director for the Animal Programs Division. In this capacity, he played a key part in managing challenges such as the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza outbreak in 2016 and efforts to combat bovine tuberculosis in southeastern Indiana.

In early 2020, Dr. Shipman furthered his expertise by participating in an international training course in Uganda focused on diagnosing and managing foot-and-mouth disease. He is USDA-certified as a Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostician and has completed a two-year Agricultural Leadership Program, which has well prepared him for the responsibilities of his new position.

Dr. Shipman’s appointment is a milestone for Indiana’s animal health services, showcasing his experience and commitment.
