Indiana's 2022 winter wheat production is forecast at 20.5 million bushels, according to Nathanial Warenski, state statistician, USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office. This report is based on conditions as of July 1, 2022.
Some highlights of the Crop Production Report follow:
- The Indiana winter wheat yield is forecast at 82 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels from last year but up 4 bushels from last month's forecast. As of June 26, 32 percent of the crop was harvested. The crop condition was rated 65 percent good to excellent, compared with 76 percent at the same time last year. Increased yields from the June 1 forecast were attributed to favorable weather during grain fill.
Nationally, winter wheat production is forecast at 1.20 billion bushels, up 2 percent from the June 1 forecast but down 6 percent from 2021. As of July 1, the United States yield is forecast at 48.0 bushels per acre, down 0.2 bushel from last month and down 2.2 bushels from last year's average yield of 50.2 bushels per acre. Area expected to be harvested for grain or seed totals 25.0 million acres, unchanged from the Acreage report released on June 30, 2022, but down 2 percent from last year
