Indiana's new push for ag trade growth

The Ports of Indiana and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance collaboration and expand agricultural trade.

This partnership aims to create new container shipping opportunities for Indiana's farmers and agribusinesses.

The MOU sets a foundation for increasing agricultural exports through Indiana’s port facilities. It also outlines plans to develop container shipping infrastructure to support the state's agriculture and hardwood industries.

By connecting key agricultural stakeholders with Indiana's ports, the partnership will explore new shipping opportunities and host forums for critical discussions.

One of the primary goals is to research container export opportunities in areas that align with ISDA’s priorities, such as agricultural commodities and hardwoods. This collaboration not only strengthens Indiana’s agriculture sector but also promotes economic development by enhancing the state's global trade capabilities.

Jody Peacock, CEO of Ports of Indiana, emphasized the critical role ports play in connecting Indiana's agricultural industry with global markets. “Our organizations are linked through shared goals that create opportunities for future growth,” Peacock said.

Earlier this year, the two organizations partnered with the Indiana Soybean Alliance and the Indiana Corn Marketing Council for a trade mission to Indonesia.

They also hosted the Indiana Container Shipping Conference, which brought together business, agriculture, and transportation leaders to discuss expanding agriculture exports and developing new container shipping facilities.

ISDA Director Don Lamb highlighted how the partnership will provide Indiana farmers with a long-term competitive advantage by improving access to global markets. Agriculture contributes $35.1 billion annually to Indiana’s economy, and the state’s ports handle more than 4 million tons of agricultural products each year.

This collaboration marks a major step toward growing Indiana’s agriculture industry and expanding its presence in the global marketplace.
