Mapping the Environment with Sound, NASA Sensors

A video featuring Bryan Pijanowski, a professor of landscape and soundscape ecology in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University, has been uploaded to the AP Video Hub.

In the video, he explains how mapping natural environments using sound and NASA sensor technology will help determine the best ways to protect biodiversity. This video can be found at https://bit.ly/3eTGjdv.

Pijanowski says that one in seven organisms on the planet are threatened or endangered and that we need to find ways to manage ecosystems so that more species are not lost. He says that his team is using NASA sensors on the International Space Station to map the structure of habitats on Earth.

Pijanowski's team is also using remote acoustic sensors to detect and catalog all the species that make sound in that environment. This project is being tested at properties near Purdue and is being implemented in areas in Tanzania, Bangladesh and Mongolia.

Pijanowski says that as natural disasters and climate change continue to impact ecosystems around the world, such as drought, systems like what his team is developing can help scientists predict how things will change and how to prevent more damage from occurring.
