A comprehensive pesticide applicator workshop is scheduled to support safe and responsible pesticide practices within the Northwest District.
The program will take place on December 4, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. CST at the Great Hall of Purdue University Northwest in Porter County. This training is designed for individuals who work with pesticides or manage pesticide related tasks in agricultural or community environments.
The workshop covers several important topics that help applicators stay informed and prepared. One major session will focus on the ongoing discussions surrounding pesticide use.
Participants will learn about current controversies, environmental concerns and the importance of following approved application guidelines. This session encourages thoughtful decision making to ensure safety for people, plants and the environment.
Another key part of the event will address emergency preparedness for pesticide businesses. Attendees will learn how to respond to unexpected situations, manage spills and follow safety steps during urgent incidents. This training helps reduce risks and supports a safer working environment for both employees and community members.
Experts from the Purdue Plant and Pest Diagnostic Lab will also provide instruction. Participants will gain insight into identifying plant issues, pests and diseases and understanding how correct diagnosis supports better pesticide decisions. This session strengthens problem solving skills and helps reduce unnecessary chemical use.
The workshop will include a 2025 regulatory update that explains new standards, rules and changes in pesticide regulations. Staying informed about these updates is essential for anyone who applies or handles pesticides as it ensures compliance and promotes safe practices.
Event details list Nikky Witkowski, ANR Educator, as the main contact for questions or support. She can be reached by phone or email for anyone needing additional information about the workshop.
This program is part of Extension education within the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology. By attending, participants will gain valuable knowledge that supports safe pesticide application and encourages improved awareness of environmental and community health.
