Indiana winter wheat production was down 15 percent from last year on fewer harvested acres and a smaller yield, according to Nathanial Warenski, state statistician, USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office.
Winter wheat was planted on 290,000 acres, with 240,000 acres harvested for grain. Indiana wheat yielded 81 bushels per acre in 2022, down 4 bushels from last year.
A late soybean harvest last year reduced winter wheat plantings and much of the wheat that was planted was planted later than normal. Despite lost potential, Indiana wheat yielded well. Mostly dry conditions during much of June helped winter wheat to reach maturity quickly. The crop was harvested without delays and harvest was completed earlier than normal.
Nationally, winter wheat production for 2022 totaled 1.10 billion bushels, down 14 percent from the 2021 total of 1.28 billion bushels. The United States yield, at 47.0 bushels per acre, was down 3.2 bushels from 2021. Area harvested for grain was estimated at 23.5 million acres, down 8 percent from the previous year. Record low planted acres were estimated in Utah in 2022. Record low harvested acres were estimated in California and Utah in 2022. Record high yields were estimated in Illinois, New Jersey, North Dakota, and Tennessee for 2022.
