USDA commits $50M to better farming jobs

Tom Vilsack announced a significant boost for farm labor conditions across the U.S. with the USDA's award of $50 million to various agricultural entities.

This funding, part of the Farm Labor Stabilization and Protection Pilot Program (FLSP Program), aims to support 141 awardees in 40 states and Puerto Rico, benefiting 177 agricultural operations and over 11,000 workers.

"This program supports small and mid-sized farms significantly, helping them hire and retain workers necessary for competitive market presence while uplifting rural communities," stated Vilsack.

"Farmworkers are crucial to our agriculture and food systems, ensuring our tables are never without food. Enhancing their working conditions is vital for a stronger, more resilient food supply chain."

Launched in coordination with other federal agencies in September 2023, the FLSP Program addresses workforce needs in agriculture by promoting safe and healthy work environments and ethical recruitment practices.

It also supports lawful migration pathways, especially for workers from Northern Central America through the H-2A visa program.

The funds are earmarked for various required and optional enhancements to elevate farmworker welfare.

These include establishing better pay benefits, improving working and living conditions, and facilitating worker engagement through initiatives like Collaborative Working Groups with significant farmworker participation.

Other benefits supported by the program include advancement and management training opportunities, no-cost English classes, and more.

The program ensures that workers are well-informed of their rights in the U.S. through Know-Your-Rights-and-Resources training sessions.

It also involves participation in Worker-driven Social Responsibility programs like the Fair Food Program, which has been recognized for improving workplace environments.

Vilsack emphasized the broader impact of these initiatives: "By investing in such robust programs, we not only support the agricultural employees but also ensure significant protection and empowerment for farmworkers."

The USDA's commitment reflects the goals of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection and supports a regional approach to handling migration challenges in the hemisphere, demonstrating a strong dedication to enhancing the agricultural sector's stability and the well-being of its workforce.
