Veteran Joe Ricker turns to agriculture to help fellow veterans

By Andi Anderson

Joe Ricker, a retired Army colonel, veteran outreach coordinator, and farm owner, has dedicated his post-military career to helping fellow veterans thrive through agriculture.

Since retiring from the Army in 2022, Joe has focused on supporting veterans by connecting them with agricultural resources, largely through his partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Joe’s involvement with the USDA includes working with Monshi “Ram” Ramdass, the USDA Military Veterans Agricultural Liaison, who assists in linking veterans with the support they need to succeed in farming.

Joe’s efforts also extend to AgrAbility, a program supported by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, which helps disabled farmers and ranchers continue their work. In the U.S., at least 634,000 people in the farming community live with disabilities, and AgrAbility has been improving their quality of life for over 30 years.

Joe’s personal experience in farming led him to become a 2023 Indiana State Fair Featured Farmer. Through his nonprofit, At Ease Orchard, Joe introduces veterans, first responders, and their families to beekeeping and sustainable farming practices.

The organization provides a variety of resources, including a specialized library, expert mentorship, and workshops on regenerative agriculture.

Joe’s mission is to help veterans find fulfillment in farming. “Veterans have a service mentality,” he says, “and agriculture allows them to continue serving their communities in a meaningful way.” His work is a testament to the power of agriculture as a pathway to new skills and satisfaction for veterans looking to build a life after military service.

At Ease Orchard continues to serve as a hub for regenerative agriculture and veteran support, fostering connections and providing essential tools for success.
