Addressing Henbit and Purple Deadnettle to Safeguard Indiana Farm Fields

By Andi Anderson

Indiana's farm fields may seem picturesque with purple blooms, but for farmers, they signal trouble. Henbit and purple deadnettle, often mistaken for decorative flowers, are troublesome weeds demanding swift control measures, especially after a mild winter fueling their growth.

Dr. Bill Johnson, Purdue's esteemed professor of weed science, underscores the urgency of managing these winter annual weeds to prevent seeding and future infestations. Speaking on the Purdue Crop Chat Podcast, Dr. Johnson highlights the risk posed by henbit and purple deadnettle as alternative hosts for soybean cyst nematode (SCN), a notorious pest threatening crop yields.

"In conditions where daytime temperatures linger in the 60s and wet soils persist, these weeds can form a dense mat, impeding water evaporation and fostering ideal conditions for SCN reproduction," explains Dr. Johnson. Failure to control these weeds can exacerbate SCN populations, leading to long-term challenges for farmers.

Despite prevailing weather conditions characterized by mild temperatures and moist soils, Dr. Johnson advises farmers to proceed with weed control measures promptly. While herbicides may exhibit slower efficacy under current conditions, timely intervention remains critical to mitigate weed proliferation and SCN infestation.

Joining Dr. Johnson on the Purdue Crop Chat Podcast are Dan 'Corn' Quinn, 'Soybean Shaun' Casteel, and new Extension Weed Specialist Tommy Butts, offering additional insights and practical recommendations for weed management strategies.

For Indiana farmers, the message is clear: prioritize weed control efforts to safeguard crop health and productivity. Tune in to the Purdue Crop Chat Podcast for expert guidance and stay informed on the latest developments in weed management and agricultural practices.

As Indiana's agricultural community rallies to combat henbit and purple deadnettle infestations, Purdue's experts stand ready to support farmers in their quest for weed-free and resilient farm fields.
